Jury Awards $20 Million to Paralyzed Florida Man in Motorcycle Defect Case

In a landmark verdict, a jury has awarded $20 million to Scott Winckler, a Florida man who was paralyzed in a 2013 motorcycle crash. The jury found that his Suzuki GSX-R1000 had a defective braking system, which led to the accident.
Winckler’s attorneys successfully argued that Suzuki had been aware of the faulty brakes since 2007 but failed to issue a recall until after Winckler's tragic incident. Despite redesigning the braking system for newer models, Suzuki neglected to address the defect in existing motorcycles.
As a result of the crash, Winckler sustained permanent injuries and is now paralyzed from the waist down. He sued Suzuki, who attempted to dodge responsibility by arguing they were not liable for that specific model. The jury, however, sided with Winckler, awarding him substantial compensation to cover his medical expenses, future care, and pain and suffering.
Winckler, now 46, has endured a decade-long battle for justice. His attorneys remarked that throughout this time, "Suzuki relentlessly tried to blame him for his injuries." This verdict serves as a significant win for Winckler and highlights the importance of holding manufacturers accountable for product safety.
